Taken in Maastricht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. This reliquary is located in the treasury of the basilica of Saint Servatius, which is a Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Servatius. From what I understand this golden box contains Servatius’s bones. Before Six flags and tourist attractions, pilgrimages were popular among the people of Europe and it gave the opportunity to show off piousness and travel a bit. This is actually one of the more prominent pilgrimage sites. Saint Servatius was the bishop of Maastricht who lived in the middle of the 4th century when the Western Roman empire was still clinging to life. The rest of the treasury was absolutely amazing and Saint Servatius’s death mask is even more costly and impressive, but I figured the reliquary box won out especially since it contains Servatius’s bones.
