This particular picture is taken of the Cologne cathedral. Truth be told I’m very surprised I got to see it. After the Rhine river cruise we headed back to Verviers. We were only in Cologne for an hour to wait for a train to take us back to Verviers. However the cathedral is located directly outside the station. It’s impossible to miss it. It stands there rising against the skyline and it’s a bit farther away than it seems due to it’s sheer size, it’s quite possibly the largest cathedral in Europe. I know it was at one point, but that might not be the case anymore. The ceiling in the Nave is 160 feet high. That could fit one big Christmas tree. It’s in a high gothic style with flying buttresses, stained glass windows, ornate tympanums, and gargoyles/chimeras. There were some also red robed (clergy?) people inside that made sure worshippers weren’t disturbed. I think they were called the Swiss guard, even though it’s a German cathedral. Basically they kept out the riff-raff, the let me of course though. I personally just went inside, marveled at the gargantuan beauty, and left. Although it’s not my favorite this cathedral is one of the ones I like the most.
