European Travels
Eliduc, my thoughts on the story.

This is a rather strange story.  It begins rather like any tale of chivalry would.  There’s a brave knight who is virtuous and true who serves a king that values him.  He has a wife that’s worthy of him and all is right with the world.  Then the king of Brittany’s advisers turn the king against Eliduc.  Choosing to remove himself from the court he voluntarily exiles himself to England where he becomes an honorable mercenary to an English king.  Although his wife Guildeluec is back in France, Eliduc falls in love with the English king’s daughter, Guilladun.  Guilladun does not know Eliduc is married and she loves him also. (In fact she’s the one who pursued the relationship.)  This is to put it lightly, a problem.  When Eliduc finally returns to his homeland he pines away. (After regaining the king’s favor of course.)  So he rushes off to bring Guilladun back.  Eliduc’s wife has him followed.  Guilladun finds out that Eliduc is married and faints.  In fact her swoon has everyone believing she is dead.  Strangely enough Guildeluec is accepting and takes the news that her husband has cheated on her very graciously…  Well it turns out Guilladun got resurrected by a magical flower petal and Guildeluec steps aside and starts an abbey where she becomes prioress.  Then Eliduc and Guilladun get married.

I don’t really like this story.  I find Eliduc to be a dishonorable lecher, he may exercise control over his body and be a terror on the battlefield, but he is no man of honor.  I can forgive Guilladun for her ignorance, although one really has to question her intelligence.  And I find it absolutely baffling as to why Guildeluec didn’t stab Eliduc when she found out about his unfaithfulness.  I find it all even more unlikely that God smiled down on all this mess.
