I thought this was probably one of the best individual works in any of the cathedrals or churches to which we’ve gone. It’s the only Michelangelo sculpture to leave Europe during his lifetime. The style looks very similar to Pieta, another work of Michelangelo. Both Marys are somber and grave in appearance. Only, in Madonna of Bruges she appears somber in that she appears that she knows what will be the fate of her son, Jesus Christ. In Pieta, that fate is realized. The fact that this marvelous sculpture was valuable enough to be stolen not once, but twice speaks wonders for the value of the sculpture. Both the French revolutionaries and Nazi Germany stole it. (It was recovered both times obviously.) Is it worthy of being visited? I think so. At least it’s better than some (most likely fake) “holy” blood. Without a doubt, this should be on a list of things to see in Bruges.
